The last release of Mac OS doesn't have the option to create a bootable USB from Bootcamp like previous versions, and it is a problem because that require uses other tools.
I am updating this post today Dec 12, 2018. The reason is that I was only using UNetbootin to create the bootable USB, I will leave guide as a second method since it still working, and I will explain to you how you can create the bootable Windows USB without extra software.
You can also just press Command+Space to open Spotlight search, type “Disk Utility” into the search box, and then press Return to open it. In the Disk Utility window, head to File New Image Blank Image. This create a new disk image (.dmg) file. Now you can open the new disk image’s root folder and can create new folders and copy/paste files from your hard drive in Windows. All the changes to the disk contents are saved automatically. TransMac is a useful software for those who do not always have access to their Mac computers. It can be used to access, modify and create DMG disk. This is cool for Windows users who want to install Mac OS X on their PC, but useful for Mac users when their Mac is not working and needs to be re-installed new and fresh Mac Operating System. Basically, you need two things: A MacOS X.DMG (or.ISO) and TransMac software. Windows operating system doesn’t support DMG files out of the box and we need to take the help of third-party tools to open DMG files in Windows. If you have a DMG file and want to convert the same to ISO on a computer running Windows operating system, there are plenty of ways to do it.
The first step for both methods requires to format your USB device to ExFAT.
Format USB to ExFAT
In order to boot from the USB, you need to format the USB to ExFAT, you can do it using Disk Utility (it comes with MacOS).
This step is the same for both methods. You need to show all the devices in Disk Utility' before to start the process.
Select your USB device in the list (not the partition), right click and then click on the Erase option:
In the next screen make sure you select these two options:
- Format: ExFAT
- Scheme: Master Boot Record
Click the
Erase
button.
If for some reason it fails, probably is because MacOS still using the USB, just repeat the steps, but if you see a screen similar to above screen is because the operation is successful.
Format USB with the terminal
You also can format the USB from the terminal, but you have to take care to use the correct device because, if you use the wrong name you will lose everything.
With this command you can list the device on MacOS:
This is an example, my USB is the disk2:
This command is to format the USB, the last parameter is the the USB:
Copy Windows files to USB - Method 1
This process is very easy doesn't require to install other software, and they are just a few steps:
Open Windows ISO
Just double click on the ISO image, MacOS mount the image automatically.
Copy files
Now you only need to copy the files and paste them to the USB.
Command + A
Select all files.Command + C
Copy files.- Go to your USB
Command + V
paste the files.
This process could fail if you are using a USB with FAT32 because the file
install.win
is over 4GB, if this is the case try to open the terminal and copy paste the files from there (no always works. Try to follow the instructions to format the USB in ExFAT, NTFS works for some BIOS).
This is the command to copy the files from the ISO to the USB:
And that is all, now you can try boot from the USB.
UNetbootin - Method 2
I will show you how you can use UNetbootin to create a bootable USB, it can be used no only for Mac but for Windows and Linux distributions too.
UNetbootin is free software and it is also available for Windows and Linux.
Check the path name of your USB Disk.
Always in Disk Utility, select the new partition that we created in the previous step, and click on the information button, it will give you the information about the new partition.
You also can use the terminal and the command
diskutil
to see the list of drives:
Download UNetbootin:
-
Download the
dmg
directly from the Website.
And copy theapp
to the/Application
folder. -
I prefer to use homebrew to install applications, you can check this article for more information: Installing Applications on Mac with Homebrew:
Makes the USB booteable
Open UNetbootin and you only need select 3 options:
- Diskimage and ISO
- Now we need open the ISO Windows image that is on our computer.
- Select your USB device on UNetbootin.
- Click on the OK, button and wait to the process end it will take a time.
NOTES:
- I tested other tools like
dd
andEtcher
but they are not working because Windows requires extra steps, for the moment this is the only easy tool that I know that works if you are on Windows try Rufus. - Some users reported that UNetbootin is not working, if after to format the USB drive and change the block size is not working for you try another Drive with enough space.

macOS Mojave bootable USB from Windows 10/8/7 PC
The macOS Mojave bootable USB can be prepared on a Mac without the help of third-party tools, just like how Windows bootable USB can be prepared from Command Prompt. However, if your Mac device is not bootable, you can prepare macOS Mojave bootable USB right from Windows PC as well. https://intensivespiritual.weebly.com/blog/download-mac-os-high-sierra-iso.
In this guide, we will see how to create macOS Mojave bootable USB drive on a PC running Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7.
What you will need:
# macOS Mojave DMG file
# A USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of storage
# A PC running Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7
# Trial copy of TransMac (no need to download now)
Once you have all items mentioned above, you can make macOS Mojave bootable USB on a Windows PC. In this guide, we’re creating macOS Mojave bootable USB on Windows 10, but you can use the same procedure on Windows 8 and Windows 7 as well.
Guide to prepare macOS Sierra bootable install USB on Windows 10/8/7
NOTE: The guide was originally written to prepare macOS Sierra bootable USB but it works with the latest macOS Mojave as well.
Step 1: Connect a USB drive with at least 16 GB of storage space to your Windows PC and move all data from USB drive to a safe place as the drive will be erased while preparing macOS Mojave bootable USB.
Step 2: Visit this page of TransMac and download the latest version of TransMac software on your PC. TransMac is a paid software but the 15-day trial copy can be used to prepare bootable USB without any issues. That said, if you often need to prepare macOS bootable USB from Windows, you should go ahead and buy the software.
Once the TransMac is downloaded, double-click on the setup file to run the installer and get it installed on your PC.
Step 3: Run TransMac software as administrator. To do so, type TransMac in Start menu search box, right-click on TransMac entry in search results, and then click Run as administrator option. When you see the TransMac Trial dialog box, Click Run button.
Alternatively, you can navigate to TransMac entry in Start menu, right-click on it, and then click Run as administrator option.

Step 4: Once TransMac is launched, in the left pane of the program, you will see the connected USB drive that you want to use to prepare macOS Mojave bootable USB. Right-click on the USB drive and then click Format Disk for Mac option.
Click Yes button when you see the warning dialog box.

This is because, if you have been using a USB flash drive with Windows operating system, the USB drive is likely using MBR partition type. So we need to partition the USB drive with GPT partition first before transferring the DMG file to the USB drive.
Step 5: Clicking Yes button will open Format Drive for Mac dialog box where you need to type a name for the drive. Since we are preparing Mojave bootable USB, let’s name the drive as Mojave install drive.
When you see the warning message again, click Yes button to continue and format the drive for Mac.
Step 6: Once the format is done, right-click on the USB drive again, and then click Restore with disc image https://intensivespiritual.weebly.com/blog/desmume-download-mac. option.
Click Yes button when you see the following warning dialog box.
Step 7: Clicking the Yes button will open Restore Disk Image to Drive dialog box. Under Disk image to restore section, click the small button with drive icon on it (refer to the picture below) to browse to macOS Mojave DMG file. Select the DMG file and then click Open.
Finally, click OK button.

Step 8: When you see the warning dialog box, click the Yes button to begin preparing your macOS Sierra bootable USB. The bootable USB should be ready in about 30 minutes. In our test, the tool took close to 45 minutes, though.

Once the bootable USB of Mojave is ready, you can connect it to your Mac device and begin installing macOS Mojave from it. Good luck!
